Did Someone Use an Emoticon in 1862?

From the journalistic institution known as The New York Times, we get an in-depth investigation into the pressing issue of whether someone used an emoticon transcribing an Abraham Lincoln speech back in 1862.

Can you believe these net geeks get so excited over a semicolon adjacent to a parenthesis?  Pants were crapped when they found out editors also took the phrase "LOL" out of an early pressing of Mein Kampf.    ;(
